Happy New Lean Year

New Year sketches and blessings immersed in musical treasure. Although, it might be suffice to only share the fairy tale dance from Shane MacGowan’s funeral and Cave’s A Rainy Night in Soho performance from the same.

1. First, the basic and most important reminder – may you never put yourself at the centre of things. Amigo The Devil is a genius, ‘Cannibal Within’ is a single from the upcoming album but I could put any other.

2. Endings are awful and strange. They leave us disturbed and bereft. ‘Legs’ is the most beautiful song ever written about disappearing, dying, the end. A friend who introduced me to Lean Year, I will cherish for the rest of my life.

3. Viva all (un)hidden impulses, longings, illusions, sex, love, naivety, romance! Reverend Beat-Man screams so greatly about it all in ‘I want to fuck you, baby’

4. ‘With the music inside, dance like there is no outside’ will forever be connected to Cave’s Fifteen Feet Of Pure White Snow video. Atakama might not be as dancable (although I massively dance to it) and I don’t know who Nevjerni Tomo is, but I know that Meša’s lyrics ‘Naši snovi o slobodi…’ are my sister, friend, and brother. ‘Naši snovi o slobodi….’ is a rare gem.

5. The Abigails are a new favorite. They haven’t existed for years, maybe that’s why. They released, I think, only two albums during their entire existence. Space and Time is just one of their utterly genius pieces. Black Hell is even better.

6. There are songs above all songs, no matter what, they are always with us. ‘Jesus Etc.’

7. Music is bliss and bless. Within us and between us. No one has ever made a better cover of Cave than the original. Sharon did. And it’s a cover of one of the most personal songs Cave ever made. People Ain’t No Good.
